Fashion Flub

Okay.....fashion, while fun, actually kills self esteem.  Or at least that’s my theory.

Last night I was thumbing through the latest Avon booklet.  Check out these lines, quoted directly from the book.

Graphic pattern disguises your imperfections.

Pleats hide your tummy

Embellished neckline draws attention to your face – longer length & swing hem hides hips.

Ruching conceals your tummy

Loose shape flatters your figure.

Now, onward to make up.  Bronzing powders, eyelash enhancers, lipstick to plump your lips and/or hide lines. A Cream make up called “Flawless.”

Hair dyes, nylons, bra’s.   Designed to hide “imperfections.”

Fashion is big business and I know, the companies making money won’t give it up, even the women who buy these products won’t give it up.

So much for the natural look.  Apparently, few like it.

However, what I find about this whole “fashion” business, is that women get the message that they are imperfect.  Less than good enough to show what they’ve got, much less flaunt it.  Think about the flaunting thing for a moment....we women (and men) are so brain washed that if we see someone whose bulges or bones are quite apparent, we think they’re sluts, asking for trouble.   I know, the moderns among us will say no, women aren’t asking for trouble.  Perhaps what we should say, is that they are brave women, and bravo to them.

Fashion of course, in its ongoing hunger, is beginning to snaffoo up the men.  Yes, men have taken to shaving things like their chests, in an effort to look hairless.  Women of course, have long run the gamut of fashion foolery when it comes to hairlessness.   Underarms, legs, eyebrows, and now their vaginas are to remain hairless at all times.

Ah..but hairlessness isn’t desirable everywhere.  No, it is most longed for, on the head.  Men get hair transplants and try products like Rogain.  Women dye their hair, curl it or straighten it into whatever is the fashionable look of the day.

It seems that in the fashion world, we’re on a quest for perfection.    While I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enhancing one’s looks a little, it is unnerving that these same types of efforts aren’t directed towards schooling, towards individual creativity, towards team spirit.  Towards self acceptance, knowing that you are perfect, just the way you are.
