Bible Story

So today, our Pastor read the story (from the bible) of King David, and his lust for Bathsheba.  She was a beautiful woman, bathing (and thus nude, I'd presume) when David first spied her.   Whether he was a voyeur or not isn't completely clear, but he was definitely an adulterer.  He brought her to his bed.  As the ruling king, he could do that sort of thing, with ease.   She became pregnant.  Then followed a story in which her husband returned from some war he was fighting (on David's behalf) and David sent him to go and sleep with her.  Again, for unknown reasons, the soldier, her husband, declined the offer and slept with some guard.  (male or female, we don't know, but likely male...so was said husband homosexual...we don't know).  Anyway, shortly afterwards David had the hubby shipped away to fight a war he knew he'd lose, and oh yes, hubby was killed.   So David took Bathsheba in with his other wives, yes, other wives, and she had kid. Or he had a kid with someone else, not sure at this point.  Anyway, somewhere in there, God found out about all this hanky panky, and decided to punish David by taking this kid.  He sent a disease, and after 7 days, said kid died.  David, who had been despondent and imploring God to let the kid live, rose from his state of mourning, and at some point, was contrite and recognized his sins.

JC...how can people read a bible and still believe in a kind and loving God?   I remember one story the F-----s told me, in which the worshipers of Baal, went up against the worshipers of Jehovah.  A contest, so to speak.  Jehovah (AKA God, to most people) smote the 30,000 or so strong worshipers of Baal with fire and they all burned.  it was sort of a case of "my god is bigger than your god," if you ask me.  Games. Not my idea of fun.  Not my idea of worship, either.

Don't get me wrong, I believe in God.  Or Gods.  I just don't think they're cruel and capricious like this God is portrayed.

Signed, the soon to be Born Again Paigan
